What this check covers

Selected lamp, glazing, mirror and visibility requirements for the vehicle and installation shown. Other lighting arrangements and special tinting approvals need individual assessment.

The result covers the selected requirements and evidence entered. It does not certify the vehicle or confirm its overall compliance.

What you need

  • Actual vehicle category, manufacture date and selected changes.
  • Lamp assembly identification, placement, switching and operating checks.
  • Finished-glass light-transmittance measurements and relevant glazing evidence.
  • Mirror, visibility and installation records for the actual configuration.

Understand the requirements

Start with the actual vehicle and selected scope

This assessment covers selected production MA/MB/MC/NA/NB1 motor vehicles with at least four wheels, built from 1954 and with documented current GVM up to 4,500 kg. Establish the actual model/variant, category, build date and mass records. Motorcycles, trailers, buses, ICVs, earlier vehicles and specialised conversions require their separate assessment. A special approval, warning-light authority or tinting exemption is not validated here.

Select driving lamps/light bars, headlamp changes, front fog lamps, daytime running lamps, glazing, mirrors/driver visibility, or the relevant combination. For glazing, select each actual window or partition separately. Unselected pathways are not assessed. A favourable measurement is not whole-vehicle approval or an inspection certificate.

Lamp assemblies, installation and operation are separate

Retain the lamp/light-source identity, applicable vehicle/date/ADR references, actual assembly and installation evidence. Verify mounting, brackets and position; wiring insulation, support and heat/chafing protection; operation, condition, obstruction, glare and driver view. A product marking or sales description alone does not establish compliance of the complete installation. Aim, photometry, beam pattern and actual physical suitability require the applicable inspection/test evidence.

The selected additional driving-lamp checks include a maximum of four additional lamps, forward symmetrical arrangement, white output, high-beam interlock and an independent on/off switch. Count actual lamp functions using assembly evidence; do not assume an unverified light bar is one lamp. This calculator cannot confirm every driving-lamp arrangement. If you have an odd number of lamps, or are unsure how a light bar should be counted, check the current TMR guidance or seek specialist advice.

A change from a halogen light source to an LED globe or HID system is not authorised by a colour or lumen figure. Different-source and aftermarket conversions need manufacturer/specialist suitability review. The selected HID checks include self-levelling and cleaning functions from the inspection manual. Queensland requirements apply to this check. A complete manufacturer option still needs exact vehicle/package compatibility and applicable installation evidence.

For fog lamps and DRLs, verify the applicable complete lamp and installation standards separately. The selected DRL operation checks include automatic operation with the permitted parking-brake/transmission exceptions, and the DRL function switching off with the headlamps other than headlamp flashing. A multifunction assembly changing to a separately compliant position-lamp function is different from its DRL function remaining on. These checks cover selected operating requirements. Confirm the complete lamp and installation requirements using current TMR guidance and the applicable ADRs. Installation and lawful road use are separate requirements.

Record finished glazing, not the film label

Identify each selected window’s material, original/factory privacy basis and later coating or film. Measure the combined glass and film transmission. Keep the instrument, date, calibration and supported measurement uncertainty in percentage points. Do not assume zero uncertainty, average windows, use a film label as the finished reading, or invent an enforcement tolerance. Record reflectance and its uncertainty separately where coating is applied.

Selected statutory comparisons distinguish the general glazing baseline, coated front-side glazing, and rear glazing with the required usable exterior mirrors. Each window receives its own comparison. The applicable material/ADR requirements and actual glazing condition remain independent. A numerical reading that meets the selected baseline cannot waive a more stringent applicable requirement.

The inspection manual mentions a possible equipment inaccuracy allowance for tint readings. This calculator does not automatically lower a legal limit or add an allowance to a reading. A near-limit or uncertainty-crossing result needs instrument and inspection-applicability review. Measurements further outside the supported range can identify rectification when supported as actual readings. Estimated or unverified figures remain review findings.

Documented factory privacy glazing behind the driver without added film has a separate basis from applied tint. Adding film to privacy glazing brings the applied-coating checks back into scope. Do not infer statutory goods-vehicle status from the ADR category alone. Reliance on the conditional goods-vehicle rear-glazing provision needs reconciliation with the actual body/class, mirror, inspection and approval records; this calculator cannot confirm that exception.

Windscreen bands and protective film need their own evidence

Film or coating outside a permitted upper windscreen band is not authorised by a high transmission reading, including clear protective film. Establish any actual special authority separately. For an upper band, measure screen height and greatest band depth and verify both the regulation and inspection criteria, original wiper geometry and primary-vision boundary. The selected calculation supports only the conservative upper-10% subset with those separate verifications; it does not resolve a broader-band interpretation. Confirm cameras and sensors remain unaffected.

No minimum transmission is applied to the supported band itself. The rest of the windscreen, applicable approved material, vehicle/date/ADR requirements, optical condition and visibility must still be verified. The result does not establish a universal windscreen approval from the statutory baseline alone.

Mirrors and visibility depend on the complete configuration

Verify applicable mirror numbers, positions, usable views, security, projection/folding and reflecting-area requirements against the actual category and GVM. Check view from the driving position, glazing/film condition, obstructions, wipers, washers and demisting. Suspension changes, accessories, loads and electronic systems may create separate interactions. The assessment does not infer these physical conditions from a make/model or lift measurement.

Keep the evidence with the dated result

Use Save entries to keep a draft without assessing it. A fresh check records selected requirements, figures, missing evidence, rectification findings and source limitations. Save its dated result to My vehicles to collect the evidence checklist and follow-up report. Reopening old entries does not reassess them or rewrite earlier findings. Editing relevant evidence invalidates the visible result until the check is run again.

Worked examples

These examples illustrate selected checks using documented vehicle details and measurements. Read all findings in your own result.

Three additional driving lamps

Further assessment required. The selected count is referred for review of the lamp or light-bar classification and layout. An odd count is not automatically reported as a prohibited installation. Check the current TMR driving-lamp guidance for the actual arrangement.

Front-side tint measures 25%

Rectification identified. For an ordinary coated front-side window without a special authority, a documented finished glass-and-film reading of 25%, with measurement uncertainty of 1 percentage point, is below the 35% minimum. Arrange compliant glazing or film and retain the new measurement. Other lighting or tint findings remain separate.

Official sources and source limits

Sources reviewed 21 October 2026. This check uses the current regulation, July 2026 inspection manual and February 2026 Minor modifications guidance. Later changes to the Minor modifications instruction have not been confirmed. Some driving-lamp arrangements, lighting conversions and special tinting approvals need individual assessment. Confirm the current requirements with TMR or an appropriately accredited specialist. The calculator does not test lamp performance, validate approvals or certify the vehicle.

The statutory lighting, tinting and loading limits used by these examples were rechecked on 22 October 2026. Specialist approval conditions still require individual assessment.

Vehicle and scope

Selected production MA/MB/MC/NA/NB1 motor vehicles with at least four wheels, built from 1954 and with current GVM up to 4.5 t. Special vehicles, exemptions and historical applicability require review.

This first check does not validate a permit, exemption, emergency/warning-lamp authority or special tinting approval.

Use the actual plate, RAV, manufacturer or accepted approval records. This selected scope starts with vehicles built from 1954; earlier and special vehicles require review.
