What this check covers
Selected body and chassis modification pathways. Individual design, strength, construction, certification and whole-vehicle compliance need the appropriate assessment.
The result covers the selected requirements and evidence entered. It does not certify the vehicle or confirm its overall compliance.
What you need
- Vehicle category, original structure and a precise description of the proposed or completed work.
- Design drawings, engineering references and manufacturer instructions.
- Material, mounting, welding, joining and physical-inspection records.
- Related seating, load, brake, suspension and camper equipment records.
Understand the requirements
Confirm the vehicle and discuss the work before starting
This check covers selected production MA/MB/MC/NA/NB1 motor vehicles already registered and used in Australia, with a documented current GVM up to 4,500 kg. Keep the vehicle identity, category, current ratings and construction records. Buses, motorcycles, trailers, street rods, individually constructed vehicles and new vehicles before first supply need a separate pathway.
Speak with an appropriately accredited Queensland Approved Person before cutting, welding or covering structural work. A design approval and certification of the finished installation have different roles. The result identifies possible codes; it does not approve a design, authenticate a certificate or establish whole-vehicle compliance.
Match the pathway to the actual change
- Roof or aftermarket sunroof: review the LH1 design and LH2 installation requirements, including reinforcement, structural testing and inspections.
- Extended wheelbase: review LH3 design and LH4 conversion requirements. A shortened wheelbase is referred for individual assessment; this check does not assign those codes to a shortening.
- Manufacturer model variant: LH7 needs evidence that the construction matches an actual variant of that model. A custom cabin is different from a factory variant.
- Custom body or cabin on a separate production chassis: the selected LH5/LH6 pathway needs confirmation of modified-production-vehicle status and the full design and construction scope. Replacement bodies/chassis and extensive reconstruction need individual assessment.
- Chassis or cross-member alterations: Queensland LH13/LH14 applies to specified categories and alterations supporting another modification, outside changes already covered by VSB 14. It excludes wheelbase changes and incompatible components. MA passenger cars are not listed. This check supports a separate-frame subset; other construction needs individual advice.
A non-structural metal panel change can have a different pathway if structural integrity and all applicable ADR requirements are maintained. Fibreglass, composite and structural panels are referred for review of their material, vehicle-date and installation requirements. Do not use a panel exemption for a separate roof, cabin or chassis conversion.
Prepare the design and inspection records
Keep the applicable design approval, drawings, material and fabrication details, vehicle applicability, structural tests and inspection records. For LH14, the LH13 package must match the make, model, variant and chassis series; the work must follow that package. Its inspection/checklist requirements remain separate from the LH14 checklist.
Roof, extended-wheelbase and construction conversions require the applicable interim inspection before paint and trim, then a final inspection. Agree the stages with the Approved Person. Covered work may need to be exposed for inspection. This check does not calculate weld strength, reinforcement, beaming/torsion performance or crash protection.
Campervan and motorhome conversions
LH11 covers an eligible in-service conversion with fixed accommodation facilities: seating and a table, sleeping, cooking and storage. The table may be removable. Loose camping gear does not automatically establish a campervan conversion.
Record designated travel seats separately from beds or camping furniture. The selected LH11 check requires at least as many travel seating positions as sleeping berths. Seat and restraint approvals, secured equipment, exits, ventilation, glazing, driver visibility and fire safety still need their own evidence. Obtain the applicable gas and electrical compliance records from the appropriate specialists.
Keep post-conversion weighing records and confirm usable payload, axle, tyre and component capacities with the occupants, equipment and travelling loads included. A body/chassis certificate does not increase GVM, GCM or towing capacity. Any rating proposal, changed ADR category or associated vehicle modifications need separate assessment.
Worked examples
Aftermarket sunroof with design records still needed
The result identifies the LH1/LH2 pathway and keeps the missing design evidence visible. Arrange the design and required inspection stages before starting; a code shown in the result is not approval.
Four sleeping berths and two verified travel seats
The result records a seating issue alongside the LH11 pathway. Resolve the layout and compliant travel seating with the Approved Person. Adding two loose chairs does not supply two designated travel seats.
Save the result and collect the evidence
Save entries as a draft, or run the check and save its dated result to My vehicles. You can collect documents and notes in the evidence checklist and follow-up report, or download the summary. Run a fresh check when the vehicle or evidence changes; earlier dated results remain unchanged.
